Fraxel Dual Laser Treatment in Boston

Dr. Ahn and Rebecca Hoffey, RNFA from the Aesthetic Wellness Center were one of the first offices in New England to offer Fraxel dual laser treatments to their patients and have since performed thousands of Fraxel treatments on patients. They have also trained other doctors on how to perform the laser skin treatment.

What is Fraxel Dual/Restore Laser?

The Fraxel Dual laser can treat a number of different areas including the face, neck, chest, arms and hands. Unlike other lasers with older technology, the Dual can treat multiple areas during a single session. Individuals may also choose to combine Fraxel laser treatments with facial plastic surgery. Fraxel Dual treatments on the facial skin at the conclusion of a facelift or mini lift can help improve the skin quality.

Laser Skin Treatment Experience

Fraxel Dual laser treatments have minimal discomfort in comparison to other laser skin treatments. Most Fraxel Dual laser patients undergo treatment with just topical numbing cream applied for an hour while others choose to undergo “Friendly Fraxel” treatments (see below). Typically patients will describe a hot and prickly sensation that only occurs during the treatment. Once the treatment is done there is no discomfort. At the Aesthetic Wellness Center we ensure your Fraxel laser skin treatment is private, professional and personalized to your needs. Each treatment is customized based on your clinical needs, issues and skin type. Because the Aesthetic Wellness Center has an accredited surgical suite, we can provide a level of anesthesia suited for the patient, ranging from topical numbing cream to intravenous sedation. While most patients feel that topical numbing cream is sufficient, some do not want to feel any sensation at all. For these individuals we have tailored a “Friendly” Fraxel Laser treatment that provides them the comfort they want. “Friendly Fraxel” is performed under light sedation, also known as twilight anesthesia. Through a tiny IV, relaxing medicine is given by our nurse anesthetist so that you don’t feel anything during the treatment. You will wake up as if nothing had happened!

Fraxel Dual Restore Laser Before and After

Immediately after the Fraxel laser treatment, the skin will feel a little warm. The skin will be a little red with some swelling. There is no pain during the recovery and you can wear makeup shortly after the procedure. Your skin may look darker in the areas of previously existing pigmentation. Over the next few days, there will be a dusty peel and the rejuvenated skin underneath will reveal itself. Most people are able to return to social activity after 3-4 days.

History of Fraxel Dual Restore Laser Treatments

The original Fraxel laser was developed by Dr. Rox Anderson at Mass. General Hospital and was called the Restore. The Fraxel Restore laser was revolutionary in that it delivered thousands of microscopic points of laser contact on the skin surface that are separated from each other. The original laser used an Erbium laser. After several years, busy doctors performing the Fraxel Restore, including Dr. Ahn, recognized its limitations (having to perform the procedure multiple times to clear pigment) and recommended targeting multiple levels of the skin to achieve better results. From this was borne the Fraxel Dual Laser. This upgrade involved adding a second laser (Thulium) that was very effective at removing brown pigment at a slightly more superficial level.

Fraxel FAQs

Fraxel is a laser treatment to improve skin quality. It does not involve injections.

Often, only one treatment of the Fraxel Dual laser is needed for sun damaged skin. If the laser is done for acne scarring, 3-6 treatments spaced 1 month apart are recommended.

Recovery after Fraxel involves 3-4 days of mild peeling, redness and some swelling. There is no pain.

Fraxel treats sun-damaged skin by stimulating collagen growth and removing brown pigment that may be superficial or deep.

You should avoid tanning 2-4 weeks before. After the treatment, be sure to wear good sun block for several weeks.

During the treatment there is a hot and prickly sensation. Numbing medicine is applied and a cold stream of air helps as well. In addition, a mixture of laughing gas and oxygen can be used to make it more comfortable. The vast majority of patients easily tolerate the 15-minute treatment.
