Preservation Rhinoplasty: A New Solution for Eliminating a Dorsal Hump

Preservation rhinoplasty

Because rhinoplasty is a highly customizable surgery, great plastic surgeons study a variety of techniques to best achieve their patients’ desired results. The latest technique to emerge in nose reshaping is called preservation rhinoplasty. Based on centuries-old surgical principles, preservation rhinoplasty is a proven solution for lowering a dorsal hump on the nose without having to remove much cartilage or bone.

Premier facial plastic surgeon Dr. Min Ahn is proud to offer preservation rhinoplasty to his patients in New England. In this blog, he explains more about this exciting new surgical option.

How Does Preservation Rhinoplasty Differ from Traditional Rhinoplasty?

A hump on the bridge of the nose is one of the most common reasons that patients seek rhinoplasty. With traditional rhinoplasty, the surgeon must sand down the bone and excise cartilage to smooth the bridge. In removing structural elements of the nose, this approach can disturb the framework of the nose, which then requires the surgeon to make additional surgical alterations to reinforce the bridge.

Preservation rhinoplasty is a technique that flattens a hump without necessitating so many changes to the structure of the nose. With this approach, Dr. Ahn can lower the nasal bridge while leaving all or most of the bone and cartilage on the bridge intact. To accomplish this, he instead removes some of the cartilage and bone from inside the nose. This creates internal space so that the bridge and hump can be pushed down to achieve a smooth surface.

Benefits of Preservation Rhinoplasty

The primary appeal of preservation rhinoplasty is its natural-looking results. Whereas traditional rhinoplasty can make the nose heal in an unnatural or undesired way due to all the surgical alterations, preservation rhinoplasty does not inadvertently change the dorsal lines.

The recovery is another advantage. Because preservation rhinoplasty avoids cutting into soft tissue (which has the blood vessels), the swelling is much less significant.

Nearly one in 10 patients who have rhinoplasty later seek revision rhinoplasty to improve their results. In fact, Dr. Ahn performs surgery on many of these patients who are dissatisfied with the results achieved by another surgeon. With preservation rhinoplasty, patients are much less likely to be unpleasantly surprised by their results since it does not interfere with the structure of the nose.

Why You Should Choose Dr. Ahn for Preservation Rhinoplasty

Make no mistake: While preservation rhinoplasty is an easier procedure for the patient, it requires more advanced skills and technique on the part of the surgeon than does traditional rhinoplasty. Dr. Ahn has an in-depth knowledge of nasal anatomy and has studied the procedure extensively.

Although top facial plastic surgeons have begun favoring preservation rhinoplasty to flatten a bump on the bridge, most plastic surgeons have still not taken the time to learn or master this technique yet. This makes Dr. Ahn one of the best choices for this procedure in the Boston area.
