Revision Rhinoplasty

Throughout his career and training as a facial plastic surgeon, it has been in cosmetic nasal surgery that Dr. Ahn has received the most extensive training possible. Having performed over 1,000 nasal surgeries, Dr. Ahn considers rhinoplasty, particularly revision rhinoplasty, to be the most challenging and rewarding plastic surgery procedure.

Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure which can repair the appearance or function of the nose following a prior rhinoplasty procedure. It may also be referred to as secondary or tertiary rhinoplasty.

Is Revision Rhinoplasty For You?

Good candidates for the surgery include individuals who have undergone a previous rhinoplasty surgery that has left them unhappy with the appearance and/or function of the nose. As with all types of facial plastic surgery, patients must also be in good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome.

The revision rhinoplasty surgery make take two or more hours to complete. Incisions are located on the inside of the nostrils and at the base of the nose. Working through these incisions, Dr. Ahn will create the desired shape by repositioning cartilage or replacing missing structures.

What to Expect After the Surgery

Immediately after the revision rhinoplasty surgery, a small cast will likely be placed on the outside of the nose. This, along with the stitches, will be removed in about one week. While some bruising and swelling may occur, this is generally milder than after primary rhinoplasty procedures. Bruising should fade within about ten days, while the swelling will fade within several months. Patients also generally experience less discomfort than after primary rhinoplasty procedures. Cold compresses can be applied to the nose to help minimize bruising and discomfort. Patients will need to avoid over exertion, risking injury and sun exposure for a period of time after surgery.
