It is commonly thought that the upper part of the face shows age about 8-10 years earlier than the lower part of the face. Therefore, women and men in their 30’s and 40’s are often first concerned about the appearance of their eyes. Droopy upper eyelids can make you look older while puffiness under the eyes can make you look tired. Blepharoplasty corrects these problems and is often performed on both upper and lower eyelids. Often the eyebrows have also fallen, causing hooding over the outer eyes. During your consultation, Dr. Ahn will help you make the decision as to whether your brows need to be elevated as well.
In upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Ahn first marks the natural eyelid crease and the excess skin to be removed using fine calipers on a millimeter scale. The incision is made within the natural eyelid crease so that the incision line can be as discreet as possible. Excess skin, muscle and fat are removed, and fine sutures are used to close the incisions.
In lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Ahn employs one of two techniques. Both correct the puffiness of the lower eyelids that is caused by the protrusion of three fat pads that exist normally in your lower eyelids. The traditional lower blepharoplasty approach uses an incision below the eyelashes through the skin and muscle to remove some of the fat pads. The extra skin and muscle are then removed and fine stitches are placed to close the incision. The newer transconjunctival approach involves placing the incision behind the eyelid so that the fat pads can be addressed more directly. There is no incision through the skin unless a little sliver of skin needs to be removed at the same time. The choice of technique is dependent on the individual and is determined by Dr. Ahn in consultation. Under normal conditions, blepharoplasty can take from one to two hours and can be performed under local anesthesia.
Immediately after the surgery a certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses, as well as head elevation when lying down, will speed healing and relieve discomfort. Following surgery, you will clean the eye area and apply healing ointment. The upper eyelid sutures are removed at 5-7 days; the lower eyelid sutures will dissolve on their own. Most people at that point are able to appear in public with a little cover-up makeup. Depending on how quickly you recover, you may expect to resume normal activity within a week to 10 days and start enjoying your new look within approximately 10-14 days. It may take about 6 months for the redness along the incision lines to fade.
Patients may experience some discomfort during the healing period after undergoing Asian eyelid surgery. This can be relieved with cold compresses and, if necessary, prescription pain medication.

Incisions made during surgery will result in scars, though they tend to be placed in discreet locations.
The incisions made during the eyelid surgery will result in scars though they tend to be well-concealed. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision and resulting scar is made in a discreet location within the natural eyelid crease. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision may be located just below the eyelashes or on the inside of the eyelid. When made on the inside of the eyelid, there is no visible scarring.
When treating the upper eyelids, Dr. Ahn first marks the natural eyelid crease and the excess skin which is going to be removed. He then makes an incision within the natural eyelid crease, through which he removes excess skin, muscle and fat. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures. There are two techniques which may be used for lower eyelid surgery. With the traditional approach, Dr. Ahn makes an incision below the eyelashes and then removes some of the fat pads located in the lower eyelids. With the newer transconjunctival approach, the fat pads are addressed through incisions made inside of the eyelids rather than on the outside of the skin. The appropriate technique will be determined at the time of consultation according to your individual needs.
Under normal conditions, eyelids surgery takes between one and two hours to perform.
Asian eyelid surgery is a procedure designed to create a double eyelid in Asian patients. The goal of Asian eyelid surgery is to create a more attractive eyelid appearance by altering the shape and height of the eyelid crease. The eyelid is most commonly reshaped into an oval appearance, though a round appearance can also be achieved.
Eyelid surgery, also referred to as Blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure which can correct droopy upper eyelids and puffiness beneath the eyes. The surgery may be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids.
Under normal conditions, Dr. Ahn performs Asian eyelid surgery with local anesthesia.

The healing process after Asian eyelid surgery can take several months. During this time, the position of the eyelid crease will change, often appearing too high at first. As the swelling subsides and the tissues relax, the crease will lower and become mostly stable after four to six weeks.
Patients can generally expect some degree of swelling and bruising. Applying cold compresses and keeping the head elevated when lying down can help to relieve discomfort and speed recovery. The eye area will need to be cleaned and ointment applied during the healing process. Patients are typically able to appear in public with little cover-up makeup after five to seven day and normal activities can usually be resumed within ten days. Though the new eye appearance will be visible after ten to fourteen days, redness along the incision can take up to six months to fully fade.
During a consultation for Asian eyelid surgery, Dr. Ahn will discuss the benefits and expected outcomes of the procedure. He will educate you about the surgery and address any questions or concerns that you may have so that you can make a well-informed decision. Much of the consultation time will be spent determining the desired shape and height of the eyelid crease, along with whether or not the epicanthal fold needs to be addressed. The potential results will be demonstrated using digital photography and computer imaging.

Asian patients who desire a more defined eyelid crease may be good candidates for Asian eyelid surgery.
Eyelid surgery is commonly performed on men and women in their thirties and forties who are looking to improve upon early signs of aging around the eyes including droopy upper eyelids and puffiness beneath the eyes. If there is hooding over the outer eyes, Dr. Ahn will help you to decide if the brows also need to be elevated.
