WESTBOROUGH, Mass., September 30, 2005 – Dr. Min S. Ahn, an internationally renowned facial plastic surgeon, was one of the featured speakers at the Annual Fall Meeting of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, September 22-25, 2005 in Los Angeles.
Dr. Ahn was one of 11 surgeons invited to participate in a comprehensive, three-hour learning session on eyelid rejuvenation. The panel included some of the world’s leading experts on facial plastic surgery and eyelid surgery.
For his part, Dr. Ahn discussed his method for blepharoplasty in the Asian patient. Over 100 other facial plastic surgeons attended his presentation.
Besides the technical aspects of the surgery, Dr. Ahn cautioned his fellow physicians to be aware of the cultural aspects of the procedure.
“Many facial plastic surgeons assume that an Asian seeking blepharoplasty wants to have his or her eyelids opened up wider to look more ‘Caucasian,’ he said.
“It is critical to understand that in fact, the Asian patient simply wants the surgeon to create an attractive eyelid crease while retaining the natural Asian features. It is important for facial plastic surgeons to be sensitive to this issue of ethnicity preservation and a non-westernized look.”
He emphasized that this issue applies equally to all Asian ethnic groups, including Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans, and more.
Dr. Ahn, who is Korean-American, also serves as medical director for the Aesthetic Wellness Center, one of the premier centers for facial plastic surgery and aesthetic medical care in the Metrowest area. He has authored many publications on various facial cosmetic surgery procedures and is one of only 22 surgeons in New England with board certifications in both Facial Plastic Surgery and Head and Neck Surgery.
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the world's largest specialty association that represents over 2,700 facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons throughout the world. The AAFPRS is a National Medical Specialty Society of the American Medical Association (AMA), and holds an official seat in both the AMA House of Delegates and the American College of Surgeons board of governors.
