Rhinoplasty FAQs (cosmetic nasal surgery)

Q-What is rhinoplasty?
A-Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure which can alter the shape and size of the nose, improving it aesthetically and creating better harmony with the other facial features. The goal of rhinoplasty is to achieve a natural appearing nose which is compatible with the facial proportions as well as the patient's ethnic identity.

Q-Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty?
A-Individuals looking to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose may be good candidates for rhinoplasty. Some patients are unhappy with the nose they were born with or with changes which have occurred through age or injury. Others are looking to improve breathing. Patients considering rhinoplasty should be in good health and have realistic expectations.

Q-Are there any age restrictions for rhinoplasty patients?
A-Before undergoing rhinoplasty, the nose should have completed its growth which tends to occur around age fifteen or sixteen. There are some exceptions such as cases involving severe breathing problems.

Q-What will happen during a consultation for rhinoplasty?
A-During the consultation for rhinoplasty, Dr. Ahn will discuss the available treatment options including the benefits and the expected outcomes. He will consider your skin type, ethnic background and age when discussing the surgery and explain how the nose can be reshaped by sculpting the nasal structures. Photographs will be taken and used with the computer imaging system to show you the potential results. If necessary, Dr. Ahn may suggest additional surgery, such as chin augmentation, to help you achieve your goals and enhance your facial appearance. He will also address any questions or concerns that you may have.

Q-How is rhinoplasty performed?
A-Dr. Ahn performs rhinoplasty through small incisions located on the inside of the nostrils and at the base of the nose. There are several different surgical techniques which he may use in order to shape and alter the framework of the nose. Once the new shape is achieved, the incisions are closed and a small cast is placed on the nose.

Q-Where are the incisions made for rhinoplasty?
A-The incisions for rhinoplasty are located at the base of the nose and on the inside of the nostrils.

Q-Does rhinoplasty result in scars?
A-The incisions made for rhinoplasty do result in scars. Those made on the inside of the nostrils will not be visible. Incisions made at the base of the nose are generally well-concealed and barely visible.

Q-Do patients experience much pain after undergoing rhinoplasty?
A-Patients may experience some discomfort after undergoing rhinoplasty which can be relieved with cold compresses and, if necessary, pain medication.

Q-What sort of recovery accompanies rhinoplasty?
A-Patients may experience some stuffiness of the nose and bruising of the lower eyelids after the rhinoplasty surgery. Bruising and discomfort can be alleviated with cold compresses. The cast applied to the nose after surgery will be removed after one week along with the sutures. At this time, most of the bruising will have faded to only minimal yellow discoloration along the lower eyelids. While the majority of swelling will fade within two to three weeks, some minor swelling, particularly in the tip of the nose, can remain for longer. Patients will need to avoid some activities for a period of time including sun exposure, exertion and risking injury.

Q-When are the stitches removed after rhinoplasty?
A-The sutures are usually removed one week after the rhinoplasty surgery.
